Description

Discover how to make sweet and sticky steak bites, a quick and flavorful dish perfect for a weeknight dinner. Tender cubes of sirloin or flank steak are seared to perfection and coated in a luscious glaze made with soy sauce and honey, offering a delightful balance of savory and sweetness. Garnished with fresh green onions or sesame seeds, this recipe is sure to satisfy your cravings with its rich and comforting flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Steak Bites

  • 500 g (1 lb) sirloin or flank steak, cut into bite-sized cubes
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Glaze and Cooking

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey or brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (divided)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated (optional)

Garnish (Optional)

  • Green onions, chopped
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Season and coat the steak: In a bowl, season the cubed steak bites with salt and black pepper to your taste. Then, toss the steak pieces with the cornstarch until each piece is lightly coated. This helps achieve a nice sear and thickens the glaze later.
  2. Sear the steak bites: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add half of the coated steak bites to the skillet, ensuring they are spread out in a single layer. Sear each side for about 2 to 3 minutes until the steak bites develop a brown crust. Remove the cooked pieces and set aside. Repeat the process with the remaining steak bites, adding more oil if necessary.
  3. Sauté garlic and ginger: In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil if the pan looks dry. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger (if using), sautéing for about 30 seconds until fragrant but not burnt.
  4. Prepare the glaze: Pour in the soy sauce and honey (or brown sugar) into the skillet with the garlic and ginger. Stir the mixture well and allow it to simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the sauce slightly thickens into a sticky glaze.
  5. Combine steak bites with glaze: Return all the seared steak bites to the skillet and toss them thoroughly in the sticky sauce, making sure each piece is evenly coated and heated through, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  6. Garnish and serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Garnish the steak bites with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately over rice, mashed potatoes, or alongside roasted vegetables for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, marinate the steak bites in soy sauce and ginger for 30 minutes prior to cooking.
  • If you prefer a spicier glaze, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of sriracha during the glaze step.
  • Be careful not to overcrowd the pan when searing to ensure the steak bites brown properly instead of steaming.
  • Use fresh garlic and ginger for the best flavor intensity in the glaze.
  • This dish pairs well with steamed jasmine rice or creamy mashed potatoes to soak up the sauce.
