Description

Classic stuffed cabbage rolls featuring tender cabbage leaves wrapped around a savory mixture of ground beef, rice, and aromatic spices, baked in a rich tomato sauce. This comforting family favorite is perfect for a hearty meal with balanced flavors and textures.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the cabbage rolls.
  2. Blanch Cabbage: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully separate the cabbage leaves and blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes until soft and pliable. Drain and set aside to cool.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until translucent and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  4. Prepare Filling: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, sautéed onion and garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix thoroughly to create the stuffing.
  5. Stuff Cabbage Leaves: Place a small amount of the filling mixture onto the center of each softened cabbage leaf. Roll the leaf tightly around the filling, folding in the sides to prevent the filling from spilling out.
  6. Layer in Baking Dish: Spread a layer of tomato sauce on the bottom of a baking dish to prevent sticking and add flavor.
  7. Arrange Rolls: Place the stuffed cabbage rolls seam side down in the baking dish in a single layer. Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the top to cover the rolls.
  8. Bake Covered: Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes to allow flavors to meld and rolls to cook through.
  9. Finish Baking: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 minutes to let the top brown slightly and thicken the sauce.

Notes

  • Blanching the cabbage leaves softens them, making them easier to roll without tearing.
  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or pork for variation.
  • Serve hot with a side of mashed potatoes or crusty bread for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
