Description

Spam Musubi Sushi Wrap is an easy-to-make Hawaiian-inspired snack that combines savory glazed Spam with seasoned sushi rice, wrapped in nori seaweed. This recipe offers a delightful balance of flavors and textures, perfect for a quick meal or a flavorful snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Sushi Rice

  • 2 cups cooked sushi rice
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Spam Glaze and Fry

  • 1 can Spam sliced into 8 pieces
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Assembly

  • 2 sheets nori cut in half
  • 2 tablespoons furikake seasoning (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Seasoned Rice: In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Gently fold this mixture into the cooked sushi rice, then set the rice aside to cool to room temperature.
  2. Fry Spam Slices: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the Spam slices and pan-fry them until they are lightly browned on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  3. Make Glaze: In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, and mirin. Simmer the mixture over low heat for 2 to 3 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  4. Coat Spam in Glaze: Add the fried Spam slices to the saucepan with the glaze, turning them to ensure each piece is evenly coated.
  5. Assemble Musubi: Place a half sheet of nori on a clean surface. Add a layer of the seasoned sushi rice in the center and press gently to form a base. Place one piece of glazed Spam on top of the rice, then sprinkle with furikake seasoning if using.
  6. Wrap Musubi: Carefully wrap the nori around the rice and Spam, pressing and sealing the edges with a small dab of water if necessary to secure the wrap.
  7. Repeat and Serve: Repeat the assembly steps with the remaining ingredients. Serve the Spam Musubi Sushi Wraps at room temperature as a tasty main course or snack.

Notes

  • You can use a musubi mold for more uniform and compact shapes.
  • Add scrambled egg or avocado slices for a delicious variation.
  • Serve with soy sauce or spicy mayo as dipping sauces to enhance flavor.
