Ingredients
Scale
Beef Brisket
- 3–4 pounds beef brisket, trimmed of excess fat
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Sauce & Aromatics
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Thickening (Optional)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for gravy)
Instructions
- Season the Brisket: Pat the brisket dry and season it evenly with salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika if using, ensuring the flavors penetrate the meat surface.
- Sear the Brisket: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the brisket for 4–5 minutes on each side until it develops a rich, brown crust to lock in juices.
- Prepare Sauce Base: Remove the brisket and transfer it to your slow cooker. In the same skillet, sauté sliced onions and minced garlic for 2–3 minutes until fragrant and softened.
- Add Liquids and Seasonings: Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, tomato paste, dried thyme, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Mix well to combine the sauce flavors.
- Cook in Slow Cooker: Pour the prepared sauce over the brisket in the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low heat for 8–10 hours or on high for 4–6 hours until the brisket is tender and easily shredded with a fork.
- Rest and Slice: Remove the brisket from the slow cooker and let it rest for 10 minutes. Slice the meat against the grain into serving slices for the best texture.
- Optional Gravy: Pour the cooking liquid into a saucepan and simmer to reduce slightly. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until thickened to make a delicious gravy to serve with the brisket.
- Serve: Plate the sliced brisket and drizzle with the gravy or spoon sauce over the top. Pair with roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or other favorite sides.
Notes
- Marinate the brisket overnight in the sauce mixture before cooking for deeper flavor penetration.
- Leftover brisket makes flavorful sandwiches or tacos.
- Serve alongside roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or slow-cooked beans for a well-rounded meal.
