Meat and Vegetables
- 675 g (1 1/2 lb) lean ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 small red bell pepper, seeded and finely chopped
Spices and Sauce
- 15 ml (1 tbsp) chili powder
- 5 ml (1 tsp) dry mustard
- 30 ml (2 tbsp) olive oil
- 60 ml (1/4 cup) tomato paste
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 250 ml (1 cup) chicken broth
- 125 ml (1/2 cup) chili sauce
- 30 ml (2 tbsp) white vinegar
- 30 ml (2 tbsp) brown sugar
- 15 ml (1 tbsp) Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Serving
- 4 large hamburger buns
- 375 ml (1 1/2 cups) sharp yellow cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Brown the Meat and Vegetables: In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the ground beef, onion, red bell pepper, chili powder, and dry mustard. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the meat is browned and vegetables are softened, about 7-9 minutes.
- Add Tomato Paste and Garlic: Stir in the tomato paste and chopped garlic and continue cooking for 1 minute, stirring constantly to combine the flavors.
- Simmer the Sauce: Pour in the chicken broth, chili sauce, white vinegar, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine, then bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if necessary.
- Toast the Buns and Assemble: Meanwhile, grill or toast the hamburger buns until golden brown. Spoon the meat mixture generously onto the bottoms of the buns. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the hot meat so it melts slightly. Top with the bun tops and serve immediately.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the meat mixture.
- Use lean ground beef to reduce fat content without sacrificing flavor.
- Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
- For a gluten-free option, serve the mixture on gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps.
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner protein alternative.
