Description

This Philly Cheese Steak Stromboli is a delicious, savory dish featuring thinly sliced roast steak, sautéed onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, and a melty combination of mozzarella and provolone cheese, all wrapped in a tender pizza dough and baked until golden. Perfect as a hearty meal or crowd-pleasing appetizer, it combines classic Philly cheesesteak flavors in a convenient stromboli form.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Stromboli

  • 1 pre-made pizza dough (one dough makes 2 strombolis)
  • 1 lb roast or sandwich steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 jalapenos, seeded and thinly sliced (optional, for spice)
  • 1 small jar sliced mushrooms
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded or sliced
  • 6 slices provolone cheese (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Egg Wash

  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Sauté Vegetables & Meat: Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C). Heat a large pan over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Place the thinly sliced steak into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Cook the steak for 2-3 minutes, then add the sliced onions, green bell pepper, mushrooms, and jalapenos if using. Sauté for an additional 2-3 minutes until the onions are lightly browned. Be careful not to overcook, as the mixture will continue cooking in the oven.
  2. Prepare the Dough Base: Using a rolling pin, roll out one portion of the pizza dough into an approximate 9 x 13 inch rectangle on a clean surface. Make sure the dough is evenly rolled to give a good base for the stromboli.
  3. Assemble the Stromboli: Spoon the cooked steak and veggie mixture along the center of the dough rectangle, leaving about a half-inch border around the edges free of filling to help seal the stromboli. Layer the shredded or sliced mozzarella cheese over the steak mixture, followed by the provolone slices if using. Carefully fold in the sides of the dough, then tightly roll the dough lengthwise over the filling, tucking as you go to secure it into a loaf shape.
  4. Prepare for Baking: Place the rolled stromboli seam-side down on a greased baking sheet or on aluminum foil. Brush the entire surface with the beaten egg to create a glossy and golden finish once baked. Cut 2-inch strips into the top layer of the dough to allow steam to escape during baking.
  5. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Serve: Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, then slice and serve immediately. Pair with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch dressing or marinara sauce for an extra burst of flavor.

Notes

  • Do not overcook the steak and vegetables on the stove as they will continue to cook during baking, preventing dryness.
  • The jalapenos are optional – add them if you want a spicy kick.
  • You can substitute pre-made pizza dough with homemade dough if preferred.
  • Using an egg wash helps the crust achieve a beautiful golden color and shiny appearance.
  • Serve with ranch, marinara, or any dipping sauce of your choice to complement the flavors.
