Description

A classic Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich featuring tender thinly sliced ribeye steak, sautéed mushrooms and onions, all melted together with provolone cheese inside a toasted hoagie roll. This American main course is rich, savory, and perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Cheese

  • 1 pound thinly sliced ribeye steak or sirloin
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or more to taste)

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms (white or cremini), sliced

Condiments and Bread

  • 2 hoagie rolls or sub rolls, split
  • Optional: mayonnaise, hot peppers, or sautéed bell peppers

Oils and Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the vegetables: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until they start to soften.
  2. Sauté mushrooms and onions: Add the sliced mushrooms and unsalted butter to the skillet with the onions. Continue to cook for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms and onions are browned and tender.
  3. Cook the steak: Push the cooked vegetables to one side of the skillet. Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Season the steak with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the steak is no longer pink.
  4. Combine ingredients: Mix the cooked steak with the sautéed mushrooms and onions in the skillet to combine all the flavors evenly.
  5. Melt the cheese: Lower the heat and lay the provolone cheese slices over the steak and vegetable mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil and let the cheese melt for 1 to 2 minutes.
  6. Toast the rolls and assemble: Toast the hoagie rolls if desired, then spread with mayonnaise or your choice of condiments. Spoon the cheesy steak mixture evenly into each roll.
  7. Serve: Serve the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches hot for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • For easier thin slicing, freeze the steak for 20 to 30 minutes before cutting.
  • Provolone cheese is traditional, but Cheez Whiz or American cheese are common alternatives in Philly-style cheesesteaks.
  • You can add sautéed bell peppers or hot peppers if you like extra flavor and spice.
