Ingredients
Scale
Bread and Butter
- 1 fresh French bread loaf
- Butter (softened) – about 2 tablespoons
- 4 cloves garlic (minced)
- Salt – to taste
Steak and Vegetables
- 1 pound flank steak
- 1 medium onion (sliced)
- 1 bell pepper (sliced)
- Salt and pepper (for seasoning steak and vegetables) – to taste
Cheese
- 8 ounces provolone cheese (sliced)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the assembled sandwich.
- Prepare Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix softened butter with minced garlic and salt until well combined. This will be spread on the bread to add rich garlic flavor.
- Sear Flank Steak: Season the flank steak with salt and pepper. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the steak for about 3 minutes on each side until it develops a nice brown crust. Remove from heat and let it rest to keep the juices locked in.
- Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add sliced onions and bell peppers. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are soft and slightly caramelized.
- Prepare Bread: Split the French bread loaf lengthwise. Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly on both halves of the bread.
- Assemble Sandwich: Layer the sliced seared flank steak evenly over the buttered bread halves. Top with the sautéed onions and bell peppers, then add the slices of provolone cheese evenly over the top.
- Bake: Place the assembled sandwich on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until the provolone cheese has melted and the edges of the bread turn golden brown.
Notes
- Allowing the steak to rest after searing helps retain its juices for a more tender bite.
- You can substitute provolone cheese with mozzarella or American cheese if preferred.
- For an extra kick, add sliced jalapeños or a drizzle of hot sauce before baking.
- Use day-old French bread for a sturdier base that holds up better under the toppings.
- Make sure to slice the steak thinly across the grain for maximum tenderness.
