Description

These Funnel Cake Bites are a delightful twist on the classic carnival treat, offering crispy, golden-fried dough bites dusted with powdered sugar and customizable with your favorite toppings like whipped cream, fresh fruit, or chocolate sauce. Perfect for sharing, they come together quickly and satisfy your sweet cravings with every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 6 tablespoons of butter, melted

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups of flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar

Frying and Topping

  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, fresh fruit, chocolate sauce, or caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
  2. Add Dry Ingredients: Stir in the salt, baking soda, and sugar. Gradually fold in the flour, mixing gently until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Prepare the Batter Bag: Pour the batter into a gallon-sized Ziplock bag and seal it tightly. Allow it to rest briefly while you heat the oil.
  4. Heat the Oil: In a frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches frying temperature. Test by dropping a small amount of batter in the oil – it should bubble and rise to the surface.
  5. Form and Fry the Bites: Cut a small hole in one corner of the Ziplock bag, then carefully squeeze the batter into the hot oil in small, bite-sized circles. Fry each side for 1-2 minutes until golden brown, flipping once to ensure even cooking.
  6. Drain and Serve: Remove the cooked funnel cake bites using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Dust generously with powdered sugar and serve warm with optional toppings as desired.

Notes

  • Be sure the oil is hot enough before frying to prevent oily, soggy bites.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove bites to drain well and keep them crispy.
  • You can customize with toppings such as fresh fruit, chocolate sauce, caramel, or whipped cream for added flavor.
  • Resting the batter for a few minutes helps it thicken slightly, making it easier to pipe.
  • Store leftover funnel cake bites in an airtight container and reheat briefly before serving to maintain crispiness.
