Description

Easy Wonton Soup is a comforting Chinese-inspired recipe featuring homemade pork or chicken wontons simmered in a flavorful chicken broth with fresh vegetables. This soothing soup is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner and can be customized with shrimp or extra veggies like mushrooms and snow peas.

Ingredients

Scale

Wontons

  • 20 to 24 wonton wrappers
  • 1/2 pound ground pork or chicken
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Soup

  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup baby spinach or bok choy
  • 1 medium carrot, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce or sesame oil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the ground pork or chicken with finely chopped green onions, grated fresh ginger, minced garlic, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Mix well to incorporate all ingredients, creating a flavorful wonton filling.
  2. Form the wontons: Place about 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges of the wrapper with water to help seal, then fold into a triangle or your preferred shape. Press edges firmly to seal tightly, making sure there are no gaps.
  3. Cook the wontons: In a large pot, bring the chicken broth and water to a boil over medium-high heat. Carefully add the prepared wontons to the boiling broth. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and cook the wontons for 4 to 5 minutes, or until they float to the surface and the filling is cooked through.
  4. Add vegetables and finish cooking: Stir in the thinly sliced carrots and baby spinach or bok choy. Continue to simmer for an additional 2 minutes until the vegetables are tender but still vibrant.
  5. Season and garnish: Season the soup with salt and black pepper to taste. Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with chopped fresh cilantro. Optionally, drizzle with a teaspoon of soy sauce or sesame oil for added flavor before serving.

Notes

  • Wontons can be made ahead and frozen; cook directly from frozen by adding a couple extra minutes to the simmering time.
  • Use shrimp or a mixture of pork and shrimp for a different filling variation.
  • Add mushrooms or snow peas to the soup for extra vegetable options.
