For the Cake:
- 1 box chocolate fudge cake mix (plus ingredients listed on box, usually eggs, oil, and water)
- ½ cup evaporated milk
- ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Filling:
- 1 (14 oz) bag caramels (unwrapped)
- ½ cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup chopped pecans
For the Topping:
- 1½ cups semisweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup chopped pecans
- extra caramel sauce or melted caramels for drizzle (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Prepare the cake mix according to the box instructions.
- Pour half of the batter into the baking dish and bake for 15 minutes.
- Melt the caramels with ½ cup evaporated milk in a saucepan over low heat.
- Remove the cake from the oven and pour the caramel mixture over the top. Sprinkle with pecans and chocolate chips.
- Spread the remaining cake batter over the top and bake for 20–25 minutes.
- Cool slightly, then top with more pecans and caramel sauce.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For an extra rich version, add a handful of chocolate chips to the batter.
- This cake is especially indulgent when served slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
