Description
These Cheeseburger Lettuce Wraps are a fresh and light alternative to traditional burgers, featuring juicy seasoned beef patties wrapped in crisp lettuce leaves instead of buns. Topped with melted American cheese, sliced tomatoes, red onion, and a tangy mayo-based spread, these wraps are perfect for a low-carb meal that doesn’t sacrifice any of the classic cheeseburger flavors.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties
- 2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
For Assembling
- 6 slices American cheese
- 2 large heads iceberg or romaine lettuce, rinsed and dried
- 2 tomatoes, sliced thin
- 1 small red onion, sliced thin
For the Spread
- 1/4 cup light mayo
- 3 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon dill pickle relish
- Dash of salt and pepper
Instructions
- Preheat Grill or Skillet: Heat a grill or skillet over medium heat to prepare for cooking the patties.
- Mix the Beef: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with seasoned salt, black pepper, and dried oregano, mixing gently until just incorporated.
- Form Patties: Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions. Roll each into a ball and flatten to form a patty approximately 1/2 inch thick.
- Cook Patties: Place the patties on the grill or skillet. Cook for about 4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. If using a skillet, cook no more than 3 patties at a time to prevent overcrowding, which can cause steaming instead of searing.
- Melt Cheese: Place a slice of American cheese on each cooked patty while still on the heat, allowing it to melt slightly.
- Prepare Spread: In a small bowl, mix light mayo, ketchup, dill pickle relish, and a dash of salt and pepper. Refrigerate spread until ready to assemble the wraps.
- Assemble Wraps: Place each cheese-topped patty on a large lettuce leaf. Top with a generous spoonful of the mayo spread, a slice of tomato, and red onion slices.
- Serve: Wrap the lettuce around the fillings to enclose the burger and enjoy immediately for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Use iceberg lettuce for a crunchier wrap or romaine for a slightly sturdier alternative.
- If preferred, substitute American cheese with other cheese types such as cheddar or pepper jack.
- To reduce sodium, adjust seasoned salt and salt in the spread according to taste.
- Can be made ahead by preparing patties and spread in advance; assemble just before serving to keep lettuce crisp.
- Serve with additional toppings like pickles, mustard, or avocado for extra flavor.
